A preview of the western division’s first round playoff match-up in the Newfoundland and Labrador Senior Hockey League (NLSHL) resulted in the Gander Flyers taking a 1-0 shutout win over the Western Royals.  Patrick O’Brien came up big in the net making 40 saves to record the shutout.  The loan goal scorer for the game was Shawn Wadden.

Fans were treated a game that combined some good old time contact hockey, some skating and spectacular display of goaltending at both ends of the rink.  This sets the stage for the upcoming semifinal playoff match that will put these two teams on the ice to battle it out on the first leg of the Herder Memorial championship.

With the win, the Gander Flyers have shown they have rebounded big time after suffering several big losses.  They have gone on to win 3 out of the last 4 matchups and won the weekend series against the Royals taking the first game at the Hodder 4-2 on Friday night before losing Saturday night at home 5-3.

The Western Royals currently set in 3rd place in the league standings with 22 points while the Gander Flyers have moved from the cellar to take position of 5th place.
