Royals in First Place

The Corner Brook Royals moved into first place in the Central West Newfoundland Senior Hockey League with a 4-1 win over the Clarenville Caribous.  With the win, the Royals extend its winning streak to 3 games and take a 1 point lead in the league standings.

The Royals took a 1-0 lead in the game when Matthew Thomey scored midway through the first period.  Berube put the Royals up 2-0 in the second period and added to the lead when Martin scored on a goal assisted by Hynes making it 3-0 at the end of the second period.

The Clarenville squad made it 3-1 at the start of the third period but sealed the victory late in the third period.

In other league action, the Gander Flyers picked up its second win of the season, defeating the Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts 5-4 in a shoot-out victory.

The Flyers Jordan Escott started the scoring at 4:07 of the first period on a goal assisted by Patrick O’Keefe and Chad Locke.  The Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts stormed back with three goals, two by Chris Sparkes and one by Justin Barbour, making it 3-1 Cataracts after the first period.

The Flyers dug deep in the second period and scored two power-play goals.  The first came from Jordan Morrison, assisted by Ryan Matheson and Jordan Escott.  Mark Tobin notched his power play maker at 15:40, tying the game at 3-3 after 2 periods.

In the third period, Andre Gill put the Cataracts up 4-3 at the 5:36 mark of the period.  Ray Dalton responded for the Flyers at 9:19 to the tie the game at 4-4, sending the game into an overtime shoot-out.

Despite being outshot, the Flyers picked up their second win of the season with Roger Kennedy making several key saves in the shoot-out, including one against the Cataracts Colin Circelli to seal the victory.  Kennedy faced 41 shots in the win.  AJ Whiffen faced 34 shots for the Cataracts.

League action resumes on Sunday at 1:30 pm.
