After 8 years in the West Coast Senior Hockey League the Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts can finally call themselves Champions, as they have earned the right to represent the west in the Herder Memorial Final by defeating the Deer Lake Red Wings by a score of 5-1 to take the final series 4 games to 1.

Tickets for the Herder Memorial Trophy Final Series games 3, 4 and 5, to be played at the Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium, will go on sale for Holding Seat bearers Tuesday, March 22nd and Wednesday, March 23rd from 7:00p.m. to 9:00p.m. Tickets for the general public will go on sale the following Tuesday, March 29th. also at 7:00p.m. to 9:00p.m. at the Joe Byrne Box Office. The Cataracts will begin ticket sales early in order to accurately assess the ticket situation in an effort to accommodate as many fans as possible in days leading up to the games.

The Cataracts organization appreciates the tremendous support shown to the team over the years by the Town, the fans, and the business community and have insisted that the Herder games will be played at the Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium. Ticket prices for games 3, 4, and 5 will be $25 taxes included.

Cataracts President Paul Glavine had this to say. “We have said all along that if and when the Cataracts qualify for the Herder that we would play our home games out of the Joe Byrne, and that is exactly what we intend to do. But the fact is, by doing so we are leaving an enormous amount of gate revenue on the table and therefore it is necessary to increase the cost of tickets to $25 for Herder home games. Even with the increase we will not come near the potential cash cow that the Herder can be, but we would have it no other way but to play at our home rink, in front of our great home fans, who have been so supportive over the years getting us to this point.”

By choosing to play the home games at the Joe Byrne the team will forego potential gate revenue of over $100,000.

“The Pepsi Centre in Corner Brook can hold approximately 4,500 fans, where the capacity of the Joe Byrne is about 1,400. So if we were to play in Corner Brook and charge the same as at the Mile One, $17 a ticket, then the resulting revenue after doing the math is very significant. Despite the opportunity for extra revenue by moving our home games outside Grand Falls-Windsor, we just feel that it is absolutely the wrong thing to do and we want to be fair to our fans and everyone else who have supported us at the local level. We hope that the fans understand this decision and why it is justified.”

I for one feel the increase in ticket prices is certainly warranted and have no issue paying the additional charge. I would like to thank the cataracts organization for giving me the opportunity to watch the herder championship series at the Joe Byrne arena. I have been a holding seat owner for many seasons and would of certainly felt betrayed by the organization if the games were to be played elsewhere. I am making the trip to Mile one next weekend for games 1 and 2 to support the team so my limited financial resources would not of allowed me to travel and pay the full expenses of hotel, meals, gas, etc. the following weekend. For us long time supporters this is certainly the right thing to do.
