UPDATE FROM THE CATARACTS
The team is extremely disappointed to announce that currently it has been unable secure opponents to play against for the upcoming season. Both the Cataracts and the Gander Flyers as teams of the CWSHL are ready to play but attempts to arrange games against either the ECSHL and the WCHL have been unsuccessful. We had recently believed that the season would be saved when HNL announced there would have to be some interlocking games between the ECSHL and the CWSHL but that decision seems to have fallen by the wayside. The offer to the West Coast League to play games against the Cataracts and Flyers were also recently rejected. Unfortunately, this means that at present the Cataracts and Flyers have no other teams to compete against. As a result of the refusal of the other two leagues to compete against the CWSHL Senior Council has announced there will be no Herder competition this season. We feel that as an organization we have done everything possible to return Senior Hockey to Grand Falls-Windsor this season but to no avail.
The organization would like to take this opportunity to offer a sincere thank you to all our loyal fans, sponsors and our many volunteers who have helped make the team so successful over the past 18 years since returning to senior competition. The organization is very proud of its record both on and off the ice. On the ice the Cataracts have won five recent Herder Memorial Championships and a national championship, the Allan Cup. Off the ice the Cataracts made a major financial difference to Minor Hockey in Grand Falls-Windsor, being the largest draw for the canteen at the Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium with all proceeds going to GFW Minor Hockey. This previous financial contribution will now be a major financial loss. In addition, the Cataracts provided entertainment to countless fans over the past 18 years on Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons and helped give Grand Falls-Windsor a sense of community and community pride.
The organization will continue with current fundraising efforts with proceeds going to help support Minor Hockey and other various local charities. The team is also in financial position to resume play at any time, either after Christmas or next season should circumstances change.
Again, we can’t thank the community enough for it’s support and we will continue to work aggressively to see that the Cataracts return to senior competition sooner rather than later.
