But if you do that you won't be able to get player insurance . You won't be able to get Hockey Canada referees and any referee who works in an " outlaw league" will be banned by Hockey Canada . The players you attract to the league will be bottom of the barrel goons . Skilled players will not wish to play in it because it is too dangerous and the fans you attract won't be hockey fans . They will be roller derby fans .Apart these few things your idea is brilliant .Toiletbowl wrote:They always can change the rule. Well from where I am sitting in the stands I don't see a whole lot of skill for the money I am paying to watch, on either side of centre ice. So a few big hits and a scrap every now and then would be at the least, be entertaining and put some life in the game! I also consider myself to be as good a Hockey Fan as everyone else. I still play the game as well!! As I see it right now the NLSHL is just a No Contact Rec Hockey League trying to promote itself as something else?Hockey Eyes wrote:But if you do that you won't be able to get player insurance . I block shots and fight, I would be entertaining to watch, if nothing else. Oh and by the way I already play with and against some of the guy playing in the NLSHL, so I do know what I am saying. Just check out the pictures and some comments on Twitter after this weekend - "It is a Beer League - the only difference is these guys get paid instead of paying." And good for them! I can't disagree with the basic point you make. It is a skating league now where players make money and everybody makes the playoff. So many of the players know each other from Junior or Maritime "B" or the Q and the Fog Devils. It is a league I bet the players love. As for the fans ?? That is another story .The league is extremely unbalanced. Fans didn't turn out in Grand Falls to watch the Cats against Gander. The reason ? Maybe it is Christmas except it isn't Christmas. It is the weekend BEFORE the weekend before Christmas.
Could it be fans just won't pay for that sort of entertainment. I can speak only to the Glacier and attendance.
After Christmas if teams are coming to the Glacier with 14 or 15 skaters I am not paying 12 bucks. If teams are not bringing a full compliment to save money because everybody makes the playoffs I understand it financially but I'm not paying 12 dollars to see it.
There is a great discussion going on in hockey about the caliber of the league and a body of though that says it actually needs to be less talented. Less talent I don't think would hurt attendance significantly in Gander , Grand Falls, Clarenville and Deer Lake. In Harbour Grace and Mount pearl attendance is already poor with the level of talent. \I am not saying I favour that only that it is an area of discussion. a hotly contested local league ... like the old AESHL. Just sayin' I would pay money ( less than 12 dollars ) to watch a bunch of guys from Mount Pearl pl;ay a bunch of guys from Harbour Grace or Clarenville of Central Newfoundland or the west coast or Labrador. Just sayin' for discussion

Players in this league got a pretty good situation going, they are all getting pretty good money (some really good) but at the same time the game is not nearly as physical as it once was thereby the chance of injury is greatly reduced.
I'm not in favour of the two fight rule because that would only result in hired goons. Back in the days of the CBN- SS Shore rivalry there was only a one fight rule back then too but the hockey was a lot more entertaining in a lot of ways. Each team had a few "character "players that put life into the game, all the players seem the same now. Just sayin' that fans find it more interesting when two teams have a dislike for each other and players play with a fire in their belly instead of a paycheck.
