Conception Bay restarts campaign with a pair of wins

Following a sluggish start to the 2019-20 East Coast Senior Hockey League campaign, the Conception Bay Blues appear to have turned the corner; the Blues recorded back-to-back wins as the ECSHL resumed its post-Christmas schedule over the weekend.

The Blues, runners-up to the Southern Shore Breakers for last year’s league championship, blanked the Conception Bay CeeBees 6-0 Saturday night after recording a 7-3 decision over the Clarenville Caribous Friday.

The Blues languished with a 1-5 start prior to the Christmas break.

At the Danny Cleary Community Centre in Harbour Grace Saturday, Matthew Jenkins stopped 30 shots for the shutout over the CeeBees. Kyle Tibbo and Brandon Burry each scored twice, while Nick David and Brandon O’Neill registered singles.

At the C.B.S. Arena Friday, Tibbo had three goals and an assist in the win over Clarenville. David, Burry, Lee Dower and Drake Dower also scored for the Blues. Chad Earle had a pair of tallies in a losing cause, and Shannon Moores scored once.

At the Jack Byrne Arena Friday, the St. John’s Caps slipped past the Northeast Eagles 4-3. Ryan Hawco, Jordan Freake, Jordan Escott and Kyle McGrath had the Caps’ goals. Chris Blackwood, Stephen Morrissey and Liam Myers scored for the Eagles.

Two games were scheduled Sunday, but were postponed because of the weather. The Caps were to have travelled to Clarenville to play the Caribous, while the Breakers were set to entertain the CeeBees at the Ken Williams Southern Shore Arena.
