Josh Fitzgerald has signed a deal with the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Fitzgerald who hails from Gander became property of the defending Memorial Cup champions over the holidays when he signed as a free agent.

As captain of the Central IcePak of the Newfoundland Major Midget Hockey League, Fitzgerald was heralded as one of the strongest defencemen in the league. After returning from the Monctonian AAA Challenge in November, Fitzgerald knew the deal was coming but didn’t expect it to take as long as it did.

However, when the moment arrived it was one of the pinnacles of his young hockey career.

The signing of Fitzgerald comes after he had been passed up in the QMJHL entry draft. While this was somewhat disappointing for the IcePak captain, he knew that getting drafted after the Monctonian was a possibility.

As for his future with the Mooseheads, only time will tell. He will finish the season with the IcePak but is ready to head to Halifax to contribute if the call comes.
