St. John’s getting a QMJHL Franchise?
Is St. John’s Getting QMJHL? There are many rumours going around that...
At the beginning of the season, the Clarenville Caribous were positioning themselves for another run at the top spot in Newfoundland senior hockey action and positioning themselves for another run at the Allan Cup here at home. The Gander Flyers were struggling to find their rhythm and sitting in the basement of the Central West Newfoundland Hockey League standings. However, fortunes have turned around for the Gander Flyers and they are riding a three game winning streak that puts them just 2 points behind the third place Caribous.
The Gander Flyers rolled into Clarenville this past weekend and walked away with two big wins, knocking off the Caribous in both games, despite being outshot. The difference in the game was clearly the goaltending of the Flyers newly acquired Wayne Savage.
In Game one of the series, the Flyers opened up the scoring on the power play when Blake Gallagher scored at the 4:21 mark of the first period.

Teammate Jordan Escott made it 2-0 in the late stages of the first period, allowing the Gander squad to take a 2-0 lead to the dressing room.
In the second period, the Flyers scored at the 1:36 mark as Steve Brazil hit the back of the net. The Caribous made it a game with two quick goals coming just 27 seconds apart as Andrew Sweetland and Keith Delaney both scored to make it a 3-2 Flyers lead after 2 periods of play.
In the third, the Flyers sealed the victory when Doug Hardiman scored to make it 4-2 Flyers. The Flyers had recently acquired Terry Ryan who assisted on the goal.
The Flyers were outshot 33-25 by the Caribous but Wayne Savage was stellar in the net.

Game two of the series saw much of the same.
Jordan Escott scored in the first period on the power play to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead after the first period of play. Both teams exchanged goals in the second period as Ryan Desrosiers scored for the Caribous to knot things up at 1-1 until Chad Locke put the Flyers ahead 2-1 after 2 periods. The Flyers were outshot 16-9 in the second period with the difference being Wayne Savage.
The third period saw the Gander Flyers open things up. Blake Gallagher scored to make it 3-1 before Dale Sullivan of the Caribous pulled his team to within a single goal.

The Flyers then put the game away with a goal by Chad Locke and another by Matt Quinn, making the final score 5-2 Flyers.
Again, the Flyers were outshot 44-31, with Wayne Savage making the key saves to backstop his team to the 5-2 victory.
The Gander Flyers improved their record to 5-8-1 with 11 points. The Caribous sit in third place with a record of 6-7-1 and 13 points.
