Flashback: Oilers (9) – Leafs (11) – January 6, 1986

In the 1985-86 NHL season, the Edmonton Oilers were one of the highest scoring teams ever to hit the ice with four players scoring 100 points, with Wayne Gretzky scoring a record 215 points (52G/163A). The Oilers would rack up 119 points (56-17-7) through the 80-game season.

To contrast, the Toronto Maple Leafs managed just 57 points (25-48-7), with no player reaching the 100 point plateau. In fact, Gretzy had more points than the top three scorers on the Toronto Maple Leafs that season.

On January 6, 1986, the Edmonton Oilers headed to the historic Maple Leaf Gardens in a match-up that would see a combined 20 goals scored that evening.

Toronto’s Russ Courtnall would open the scoring in the first period at the 2:40 mark to give the Leafs the early lead and the Leafs would go on to finish the first period with 5 goals, taking a 5-1 lead into the dressing room. Miroslav Frycer would score his first of the evening during the first, netting a power play goal.

The Oilers would storm out of the gate in the second period as Gretzy would score two that period, completing his hat trick. They would manage to score 5 goals that period but the Leafs would still manage to take a lead into the dressing room when Wendell Clark scored at the 19:43 mark of the second period to give the Leafs a 7-6 lead to the dressing room.

In the third period, the Edmonton crew would take the lead early in the period as Jari Kurri and Glenn Anderson scored early in the period giving the Oiles an 8-7 lead. Miroslav Frycer would tie the game with his second of the night and then give the Leafs the lead once again as he scored his third of the evening on the power play giving the Toronto squad a 9-8 lead. Glenn Anderson from the Oilers would tie the game just minutes later making it 9-9.

Frycer then picked up his fourth goal of the night, giving the Leafs a 10-9 lead. The Leafs Dan Hodgson would give the Leafs and insurance goal late in the period and giving the Toronto Maple Leafs an 11-9 win over the Oilers.

For Toronto, Miroslav Frycer would end the night with 4 goals.

For Edmonton, Wayne Gretzky would have a 6-point night (3G/3A), as would teammate Jarri Kurri (1G/5A).
