Corner brook Royals vs Deer Lake Red Wings
The Deer Lake Red Wings were handed their second loss of the season at the hands of the Corner Brook Royals on Friday, January 24, 2020 at the Hodder Memorial in Deer Lake.
The Wings opened the scoring at the 17:08 mark of the first when Brett Urquhart scored making it 1-0 after the first period.
Corner Brook stormed back in the second period when Lucas Fabijancic scored at the 1:55 mark to even the score at 1-1. Matthew Colbourne made it 2-1 Royals at the 6:46 mark of the seconed. Jody Kelly gave the Royals a 2-goal cushion scoring at the 10:10 mark. The Wings Luke Parsons would then score a pair of goals at the 10:54 mark and again at the 12:57 mark to knot the score at 3-3. William Keating of the Royals would give the Corner Brook team a 4-3 lead after he scored at the 13:50 mark, making it 4-3 Royals after 2 periods.
The third period saw the Deer Lake Red Wings open the scoring at the 0:58 mark, making it a 4-4 tie. The Royals would then score 3-goals, one by Ryan Roche at 4:30, one by Alex Hillier at 5:31 and another by Matthew Colbourne at 10:17 to put the Royals up 7-4. The Deer Lake team would answer back at 16:37 when Lucas McKay scored making it 7-5. Just 23 seconds later, McKay would add another goal making it 7-6 Royals with just 3 minutes left. The Royals would seal the victory when Alex Hillier scored in the empty net making it 8-6 Corner Brook.
Alex Hillier of the Royals had a 4-point night (2G/2A) with Matthew Colbourne picking up 3 points (2G/1A) for the winners. Ryan Penney of the Red Wings had a 4-point night (1G/3A) and team mate Luke Parsons added 3-points (2G/1A).
Bradley Power stopped 33 of the 39 shots he faced for the win. Jeff Murphy made 16 saves, facing 22 shots for the loss & Jordan Best stopped 2 of the 3 shots he made for the Wings.
Deer Lake Red Wings vs Port Aux Basques Mariners
The Deer Lake Red Wings rebounded from their Friday night loss against the Corner Brook Royals by thumping the Port Aux Basques Mariners by a score of 9-1.
The Red Wings opened the scoring in the first period when Lucas McKay scored at the 3:54 mark. Ryan Penney of the Wings would make it 2-0 scoring at teh 12:22 mark, giving the Red Wings a 2-0 lead heading into the dressing room after one period.
In the second period, Ryan Penney of the Wings scored at the 3:39 mark to extend Deer Lake’s lead to 3-0. Luke Parsons made it 4-0 with a goal at the 6:27 mark. Port Aux Basques got on the board when Mike Rose scored to make it 4-1 Wings. Alex Tulk of the Red Wings restored the 4-goal lead at the 18:32 mark of the second. Deer Lake led 5-1 after 2 periods.
Drew Langdon would make it 6-1 Deer Lake scoring just eleven seconds into the start of the third period. The Wings would go on to score three more unanswered goals. Morgan Thorne scored at the 7:10 mark, Drew Langdon scored again at the 15:29 mark and Mason Campbell rounded out Deer Lake’s scoring at the 18:45 mark.
Deer Lake won with a final score of 9-1.
Ryan Penney of the Wings had a 4-point night (2G/2A) and Stephen Simms would have a 3-point night (0G/3A). The only marker for the Mariners came from Mike Rose.
Billy Clarke picked up the win for Deer Lake, stopping 40 of the 41 shots he faced. Byron Francis was tagged with the loss for the Mariners, stopping just 38 of the 47 shots he faced.
