It seems that Newfoundland Hockey Talk’s mailbox has been filled in the last few days saying that Mr. Darren Colbourne is getting in shape to make a return to the Western Royals.

Oddly enough, there was a chance meeting that I had with Darren in the parking lot of Coleman’s Garden Centre a few weeks back.  Darren and I have known each other for a long time.  We met through mutual friends and when we see each other, the topic always turns to hockey.

We chatted for a bit, I razzed him a little about wearing his Clarenville Caribous jacket because in my opinion, Darren was and will always be considered a member of the Corner Brook Royals.  His heart is with the Red, White and Blue and his career with this historic organization is second to none.

I asked him about the rumor going around about him lacing them up.  To be honest, his response was exactly what I had expected.  He indicated he was happy with some coaching, busy with his family and his job.  We joked about the league, how it has transformed and how his old legs couldn’t keep up with the younger players of today.

We spoke about the way the game has transitioned and the great local talent.

At the end of the conversation, I feel quite comfortable saying that personally, I don’t think there’s any truth whatsoever to this rumor.

The fire is in the heart of Darren, he’s a great player and has always given it 100% when he’s on the ice.  I get the feeling this time that he’s finally found peace with the fact that his senior hockey career has ended.
