Brandon Fewer’s goal with just under a minute left in regulation time proved to be the game winner as the St. John’s Caps edged the North East Eagles 6-5 in the season opener in the Avalon East Senior Hockey League.
After 20 minutes, the Eagles had a 3-1 lead and took a 5-3 lead into the dressing room after 40 minutes. The Caps battled back to tie the score before Fewer gave his team the win.
Along with Fewer’s game winner, Cody Squires chipped in with a pair of goals for the winners. Teammates Jacob Pritcher, Ken Mahoney and Jon Caul notched singles. The Eagles scoring was done by Kevin Reid, Chris Mooney, Brock Hopkins, Mason Reid and Danny Connolly.
The Eagles outshot the Caps 42-31, with Kyle Downer picking up the win and Mark Yetman suffering the loss for the Eagles.
